This is the second book I have read by Nicholson (the first was "A House of a Thousand Candles") and enjoyed that I could not pre-script the plot as I read it. In both books, the 'hero' is less than 'perfect' in the sense that his actions or thoughts are not always crisp, rational, and straight-forward. I enjoy 'conversational' books (the characters either interact with others or are analyzing the situations in their own mind) rather than tedious descriptive sections and this book delivers in that respect. While the book is relatively shallow philosophically and will not offer any substantive intellectual stimulation, it still provided enough nuances to keep me engaged till the end.Product details

The Port of Missing Men is both an exciting mystery and a romance. We follow the main character without being able to quite figure out who he is. Is he a nobody? Or a somebody? And who is on the side of good and who is bad? . . . I really enjoyed creating this audiobook for Librovox.org. ) I am not a professional reader, just someone who enjoys reading out loud as a hobby. I was quite surprised to think that someone (anyone) would consider paying $50 for one of my projects.

Indiana author Meredith Nicholson's "The Port of Missing Men" reads like a breeze. From information I found, this was his bestselling novel, reaching #3 in 1907. It's easy to see why. It combines espionage, action/adventure and a touch of romance. The illustration of the woman on the cover of the A. Wessels 1908 version is one of the main characters, Shirley Claiborne. The tale begins in Geneva, Switzerland with political intrigue regarding the crown of Austria. The leading character, John Armitage, meets a ranking official serving the Austrian crown who is assassinated soon thereafter. There is a chase for missing documents that includes thugs, fake diplomats and a cruise across the Atlantic to Washington, more attempted assassination mixed with romance to set the stage where the parties meet again. The struggle moves to the hills of Virginia where the story crashes to climax at a rocky bluff called "The Port of Missing Men" named after Civil War soldiers who refused to surrender. The tale is gripping and holds up well 100+ years since its publication. Enjoy!
dated, but fun if you enjoy reading about strong-jawed heroes and Gibson-girl American ingenues. the conclusion was actually a bit of a surprise
I really enjoyed this book. I've read two other novels by Meredith Nicholson, The House of a Thousand Candles and Rosalind at Redgate, and I find his stories to be unpredictable, fun, and exciting.
This is a fun read in the genre of the optimistic view of the first decade of the 20th century. The old world and the new come into conflict and the young hero and heroine choose the new. It's a cross between John Buchan (39 Steps) and Henry James (The Golden Bowl), an adventure in which the anarchists are defeated and a romance between a young European overachiever and his American girl who find happiness together and set out for his ranch in the west.
